Student Unions for Sustainability During the 8th Sustainable Campuses National Conference held in Prince Edward Island in September 2006, SYC adopted a campaign to involve all student unions in a sustainability process from now until 2010. In Québec, the FEUQ voted for a motion bringing its support to the SYC project and its participation in this campaign. The Regroupement étudiant des facultés d’administration de l’Est du Canada (RÉFAEC) and the Coalition étudiante trans-actions responsables (CÉTAR) are also partners of SYC in bringing together everyone’s efforts to work for the sustainable development of student unions. Since student unions are essential actors to institutionalize a sustainable development process, SYC offers its support to student unions for the adoption of internal practices that are part of a sustainability perspective and participation in the Sustainable Campuses project in place in their institution.

Whether it be for…

  • Writing a sustainable development policy or action plan
  • Starting up a strategic planning process
  • Benefiting from practical training (conducting a review of the ecological footprint of the association, sustainability action plan, etc.)
  • Evaluating the eco-responsibility of events

or simply to discuss your concerns related to the sustainable development of your student union, do not hesitate us.

Here are two guides to support your efforts: SYC Student Unions for Sustainability Guide Student Unions for Sustainability Guide (adapted in Québec)

You will also find various useful documents in the Resources section. Get informed to know if your union is represented in the Comité d'actions stratégiques québécois des associations étudiantes (CASQ-asso)!

Défi climat Campaign Will you help your university to participate this year?

Défi climat (Climate Challenge) is a major mobilization campaign to fight climate change that brings together more than one hundred companies, public institutions and organizations from the Montreal and Quebec City regions. This means that more than 40,000 citizens are engaged in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by changing their lifestyles and transportation habits. Since 2009, the SYC has participated in the organization of a campaign to encourage universities to join up. The Polytechnique, ÉTS, Université de Sherbrooke, McGill University and UQAC have risen to the challenge in 2009 by raising the awareness of thousands of students and university employees who have each committed to taking action in their daily lives. Bravo and thank you to all the students that have promoted the campaign on their campus!
